Oh Come Guy, In A Fixed Gear Style

I have been seeing these "dudes" everywhere that look like bike messengers, but are indeed not. Bandanna neck-wear, rolled up shorts, hats with the bill popped up or crooked, hip man-purses. You know what I am talking about, they dress that way even when they aren't on bikes. I would like someone to explain this ridiculous trend immediately.

I am mainly talking about people who aren't bike messengers, or who don't ride bikes all that often but look like they do. (see picture of dude with bandanna). I have friendsthat dress like this and I love them as freinds, but I just want to shake them and say "you look like a futuristic Huck Finn...thats not a good thing." I ride my bike to work more often than not, I have no desire to wear a bandanna or hat with a flipped up bill, plus wouldn't that cause drag?

yeah, yeah, ... I know, I know.
Not meant to offend, its just sorta silly, like people who get straight edge tatoos then a year or so later they start drinking and smoking pot.
Like, I think my pals who are into this trend will look back in a few years and say "I don't remember being so metro in the early 2000's"

cash, you should rename your blog THE BIGGEST HATER IN RIVERSIDE, or RIVERSIDE HATER, or just HATER...

i think we should be thankful that people are out exercising, sharing the roads with cars, and making Jacksonville look a little fitter... no matter what their biking garb is.

you just wait until your pants get stuck in the chain and you bust your ass... you'll be wearing them rolled up in no time. then your hairy legs might become a problem, so you'll also have to shave your legs. then, we'll all have the pleasure of seeing your sexy-sweat-glistened calves everyday. then, i'll remind you about the "oh come guy, in a fixed gear style" blog post.

I hear what your saying but what are you going to do? The fixed gear thing is no different than surfing in its early days or skateboarding in the 80s. Most people do it because they love it and some people do it because they are lost and need a scene to feel alright. Sadly most the time folks on track bikes are just labeled hipsters trying to be cool. Oh and I wear my hat normal, don't need a scarf, and roll my pants so that they remain pants (chains get hungry). Bandannas are for snot and snot alone. peace......

Commuters in Riverside are growing substantially and when problems arise in their bicycles they are forced to turn to surrounding over-priced business class oriented bike shops = pricy investments. Thus the fixed gear/single speed is becoming the transportation of the middle-lower class.

These bicyles are simplistic; easy repair and easy conversion from older frames. Old shit is old shit, it's going to break.

I was a messenger downtown, 1 of 3 so far. There is no need and probably not for 5-10 yrs. There is plenty of parking and documents/videos/depositions are usually never truly 'rush'.

Is this primarily commuter influenced trend so ridiculous? Saving themselves money on gas, reducing traffic, providing a sense of community and holding events to share their love for 2 wheels? We are not the atrocity that travels from the suburbs to collect at the Pearl.

People were just as ugly before they rode bikes, it's just their more mobile and out of their living rooms riding past while you wait in traffic dressed in your preferred hobby apparel; 'blogger' imprinted t-shirts with a macintosh apple sticker dwelling on the rear of your bumper while you myspace on a sidekick.

I get your point clearly and I agree that there are a lot of people that happen to ride fixed gear and single speed bikes that are, I don't want to say posers but, not in it for good reasons. While a lot of people want to jump down your throat because at first glance it seems you are attacking the bicycling community, I realize it is merely the douche bags that flock from scene to scene to fulfill their "coolness" standing with all their friends. I hate fake people and I wish people would just figure out who they are instead of being cookie cutter pop outs of the next big thing, only to leave it behind when something new comes along. However, In this particular instance I have to say, at least it is helping a good cause. That cause being growing awareness of both physical fun activities and forcing all the bad drivers to slow down and pay better attention.

In reference to your original question though, these bandanna wearing, flipped up hat bill rocking hipsters are leaching off of fads that most definitely originated from the bigger city bike messenger crowds. But if it helps them feel special and original, I say let em have their fun.
