Folio Weakly

the celebration of MEDIOCRITY!!!!!!!.
I was thinking about writing this earlier, but since I have friends at Folio I almost chose not to. For a while it seemed like Folio was taking the role it aught to, I was wrong. I thought that the days of Folio pandering to advertiser were over, I was wrong. I am at risk of sounding bitter about the actual article (there might be a tinge of bitterness), but honestly I am just sick of Folio's potential wasted on mediocrity.

First, lets get the Whirlwind Heat article out of the way (consider this my personal rebuttal not the store's.):

It was nothing but mis-quotes, non-quotes, spin, and was absolutely wrong. What? Was Timmy Hall upset because of all of this and decided to tell Folio that if they didn't spin an article his way he would pull his much need ad money? They quoted him as saying there "hasn't been a single band" he hasn't payed what they deserved "if everything is on the up and up." I know personally many times that he has not paid friends bands, one of my bands, or the bands that we played at Jack Rabbits or Freebirds with. I have personally paid traveling musicians out of my own pocket, so as to make sure the band had food money for the next day, and put them up at my own house so they didn’t have to sleep in their vehicle. The article makes it seem as though Tim Hall is trying to come across as the victim. Our in-store got more people to go to the show, in turn making Tim Hall more money than he would have, AND he didn't have to pay them a guarantee (which incidentally was a very small side note in the article.) He came away smelling like roses. Folio also failed to quote me… which would have successfully countered his arguments (such as the discussion about the radius clause… and how radius contracts DON’T include in-stores, but COMPETING SHOWS.) The quotes they represented Max with made him sound like a bitter valley girl; none of his logical and responsible points were noted.

Secondly, and the main point:

Hey Folio!!! NO ONE cares about your cover stories on Myduke and his travels to Disney (isn’t this his second cover in as many months), Mactruque’s mental health (I love you Mac), or my dad’s harmless slot machine business (I love you too dad.) It's all fluff. There are soooooo many more pertinent things going on in Jacksonville this year, and that a somewhat-respectable publication is writing about such inconsequential things is absurd. Thank God it’s free. I was excited that some new writers might give that paper some much needed balls, but I was wrong. Again, all they do is slant stories to favorably massage their advertisers asses.

This isn't the first time they have spun a story on me personally. Does anyone remember the Voodoo Lounge incident? For those of you who are unfamiliar with the story, I’ll elaborate on THAT at later. The story about my dads business was completely twisted… again, I’m not motivated enough to give you all the details at this moment, but briefly, my father opened a slot machine business located at Emerson, near Wackos and an adult video store. The community was outraged!!! A slot machine room near our beloved Wackos and adult film store?! But WE wanted a Starbucks or Moe’s!!! So naturally, Folio writes a cover piece on how his business has cheapened the neighborhood even further. My question is, why does Folio need another garbage article when anyone that is somewhat capable of thought knows that a Starbucks or Moe’s is NEVER going to open next to a strip club and porn store. My dads place is completely harmless. I have to admit I had reservations about places like that, but after going in to the dark and depraved world of slot machines, I saw that a lot of those people are aging, lonely, and just want to put quarters in a slot and socialize with other aging loners. Folio could actually be a voice in Jacksonville if they wrote stories people actually care about. As it stands it just seems like liberal smoke blowing. They also say that they are speaking the truth and not doing it for the money.... Ohhhhh REALLY? Where then are all the stories about the important things happening every day in Jacksonville. I suppose it’s just safer to write about some idiot and his tiger suit because it’s funny, right?

I've said it before… Jacksonville is growing, voices are appearing from the coffee tinted smog, and people not understanding and embracing that fact are going to be left in the green algae clogged ditches.

My friends at Folio (Owen, Gwynned, and John) I thought you were better than this, hopefully you will prove that you are. I am also hoping that my friend Owen actually wrote a better article and it was edited down to what I read.

to quote Thom Yorke's song "Black Swan" on his new album "the Eraser":

"this is fucked up, this is fucked up"

For a moment I took this post down, thinking it was too early and it would look like I was just bitter, and thinking it would re-stir the boiling Whirlwind Heat (badum bum cha)pot. Then I re-read what Joey Marchy wrote to Nick Strate about his Boomtown/Jungle Runners post:

"I commend you for not taking the post down."

"One, if you stand up and have something to say AND you want people to listen to you in the future, you can't back down because someone asks you."

"Two, Google has already cached your blog post. There is no removing it, it is online, forever. Removing it would be a futile attempt to please someone who objects with what you have written. See point one."

"For future reference to all those out there blogging or thinking about blogging. If you make a mistake, say you made a mistake. Take action, correct the mistake, but don't remove the post. It makes you look like you have something to hide."

good words from a good man. If the post upsets people, including friends, then I can talk to those friends and possibly change the way I feel about it later, This is how I am feeling now and I am proud of that because its human.

as I said Owen, you are my friend so I hope that you don't take anything I say personally on a friend level. Honestly I really don't think a letter to the editor would do anything, as obscure as this blog is, more people read it than people who read letters to the editor, or at least more people that matter. Again, who really takes Folio seriously, and with covers stories like Folio has why should they? I know its a great job for you, you get paid to write, and it will look great for future positions, but I hope you either A) don't take it too seriously or B) do some strong arming and make a difference at that rag.

for gods sakes, A RIVERSIDE GOSSIP COLUMN??? yeah thats going to legitimise Folio.

As phillip sits here not knowing what I am writing about he is looking at Folio, and he said, "all these stories are just boring"

kp--

this is max, i own the store with cash.

i wrote the update on the mcr website before actually reading the folio article. i had only heard from several people that the store looked awful and we needed to put together some sort of damage control.

after reading the article, i didn't really understand the hooplah and intended to take down the update since, as you pointed out, it seems sort of silly, pointless, and probably makes us look a bit worse than the folio article.

so i guess i'll edit it out right now. thanks for the reminder!

totally,
max

People coming to me and saying "Folio really fucked you guys" made me react. Maybe stories about Myduke are worth it, but two cover stories? Owen- the list of things going on right now goes on and on and on. The story on black hammock got the back page, no mention of Philip Ramsey’s Blueberry Festival troubles with the city and silly government officials with a pointlessly vehement desire to stop it was even mentioned, the Green Street Park is being absurdly GIVEN away by the city for low-income housing after being donated to the city as a "public property…" park. The endless troubles with parking downtown merits immediate coverage. I can see how someone would be entertained by Myduke, but why make it the cover story? Why wasn't the story about kids getting expelled from school because of their Myspace-manners on the cover?

You’re right- I don’t know much about journalism. But I do know that if you ask any Folio reader what they really think of it, they’ll tell you what they really think of it.
It’s boring for the most part. The reason a lot of people are reading urban Jacksonville and Ricotta Park is because they have a voice, they have strong opinions and are not afraid to write them. Take Bill O Reilly… I hate the jerk, but he has a sharp and colorful (and annoyingly abrasive and nasty at the same time) style that people listen to. I know you have things to say Owen, so say them... I understand that you wrote the story because you did have an opinion, but it was lost in the jumble of Max and Tim quotes. Honestly, Tim’s quotes made him sound legit and the Max’s quotes made him sound pretty silly. You even mentioned max's age… like saying- THIS IS HOW A LITTLE TEENAGER SOUNDS LIKE NEXT TO A REAL BUSINESSMAN.

You (or the editor) don’t have to pander to the ad money… if you lose ad space, there are plenty of people who will be there to fill in the gap. Another business owner I talked to about this asked me, "do you buy ads from them? [“no”]... well there you go… as soon as I started buying ads from them their demeanor towards my business completely changed… like a total 180."

When the Voodoo Lounge vs. the Cadets bullshit happened, Folio only included the Voodoo Lounge owner’s view on it. The explanation I got from Folio was- "We get ad money from him and we don't want him pulling out because of this story." Leah Weinberg had written a whole article about the bologna that happened. The Outlaws (a dangerously maniacal biker gang hanging out at the club the night The Cadet’s played) threatened to kill us at a show that Leah set up. The story was bumped for a "buzz" that only quotes Cory (the crazy club owner that did nothing to protect us from the dangerous biker gang).

As far as directing you to Max when you called, you got off the phone before I could talk to you about it. I would have loved to talk to you, and would still love to talk to you. (I always do.) You got off fairly quickly and I had a customer at the counter. I also don’t have you’re number.

This is not an I-have-a-problem-with-Owen-Holmes-thing… this is a c'mon-Folio-do-what-we-all-know-you-can-thing. As it stands, the only reason most of the people I know (me included) pick up Folio is for News of the Weird and the crossword puzzle. After reading this last comment by you Owen, I asked a mutual friend what she thought of Folio and its stories, just to see if I was off base, to which she responded- “I read some stories sometimes because I am friends with Owen, but for the most part they don't write about anything I am interested in… Like the story on Mac… I could have come up with better things to talk about than that… and I am not a writer.” Folio should be the finger pointer that is claims to be, it should back up its claims if it wants to be taken seriously. When the Times Union gets the jump on you, you know you have some problems. I mean this debacle happened almost a month ago, who really cares about it now?

Those articles you mentioned are great contributions to Folio. Why weren't those on the cover? Again, maybe myduke deserved the cover, but does he deserve two?

another point is, if you are going to quote Tim about always paying bands shouldn't you look into it and see if its true?

And the great rumour mill of Jax states that another mutual friend was asked to do a "Sex and the city style" gossip column, dear lord my anus rumbles at the sound of that.

plus isn't Folio a "news and opinion" magazine. Doesn't that mean you are somewhat expected to have an opinion.
If Tim was mad about the Jackrabbits vs. Cafe 11 article its his fault. I don't remember too much of your opinion in it, all the stuff that made him look bad was stuff that he said. Right?!

Owen,

Despite your intention, your comment about Max's age didn't read in a favorable way in the article. For those who don't know Max it would seem that he's a kid making bold claims while the very next paragraph talks about Tim Hall "booking local and national acts" for seven years. You take the time to legitimize Tim Hall while you don't do that for Max. Simply stating something along the lines of "Max Wood, who at 19 is already the co-owner of Moon Colony Razorblade..." would have gotten that point across.

If I didn't know Max and you told me that a 19 year old wanted to have a band play at 1. A swimming pool and 2. an area laundromat I don't really see how I'd be able to glean a favorable impression of him.

Right now on 'Days of Our Lives' Austin is fantasizing in the shower about his ex-girfriend Carrie whose sister Sammie, Austin is currently married to. To make things trickier, Austin's brother Lucas is married to Carrie and they have a baby on the way. Oh, and Lucas and Sammie used to be an item until they were broken up by Lucas' diabolically minded mother Kate.
Elsewhere in Salem, Belle and Mimi are both pregnant. Mimi is married to Belle's ex-boyfriend Sean and Belle is married to his friend Phillip. Since infertility is rampant among women in their early twenties, Mimi and Belle were forced to undergo invitro fertilization. Both pregnancies were successful, but upon doing a dna test on each embryo, doctors discovered that Mimi's egg was accidentally fertilized by Philip's sperm and vice versa. This discovery prompted Belle to finally admit that she still harbors feelings for Sean and is glad that she is carrying his child.
These sort of complex human dramas play out every day in Salem...and I'm sure they do in Jacksonville too. Just something to think about.

i Just think its nice that people know how to spell my difficult name. i'M sorry that folks don't think creating things like the farmers market, art in Empty windows, or artwalk is "relevant"- and of course the only reason they were interested in writing is because i was trying to escape this spiteful city [yes Cash, i think i am talking to you, but i don't know- it could just be a dose of brotherly love], but couldn't raise the money because there is no support. i Think THAT is worth focusing on, so i will close where i started, appreciating people who care about this microculture, our microculture. And worry not, i will escape as soon as i have the chance. -mactruQue

interesting to read these posts a year after they occurred. I was just dreaming the other night about Folio Weekly. I was having dinner at a trendy restaurant, when I spied a copy of the latest issue of Duval County's largest weekly newspaper. I went to snag it from under a counter, when a waitress stopped me. "That's my only copy...you can read it, but return it to me, please." How I miss reading it... I used to be one of their ad sales reps, but when you have a 200% turnover rate in a year, something stinks. It must be management. If they only treated their people honestly, gave them a good base salary, plus benefits and a commission... They don't necessarily cater to their advertisers as they do coddle them.
